Brighton & Hove Healthwalks

Healthwalks Brighton & Hove

 

Healthwalks are short, social walks that are led by Volunteer Walk Leaders. They are designed to help people get the most out of walking for their physical and mental health; and also provide a great opportunity to meet new people. They are friendly and supportive, so are particularly beneficial to those who are getting little or no exercise, recovering from illness, or lacking in confidence. All the walks are clearly graded so you can see how long they are, and if they include any hills. The scheme won best Health & Wellbeing Initiative at the inaugural Brighton & Hove Public Sector Awards in 2009 and is nationally accredited via the Walking for Health scheme.

 

Helathwalks Group

There are two editions of the full Led Healthwalks Programme each year, one for Autumn/Winter, and one for Spring/Summer. There are walks every day of the week and of varying length and difficulty.

Walking is probably the most accessible and effective forms of exercise there is, and can lead to a range of physical and mental health benefits including:

  • Starting moderate exercise from nothing halves your risk of a heart attack and Stroke.
  • Regular walking can improve bone density and flexibility.  It can also help with co-ordination and balance.
  • Walking in open spaces, especially in the countryside, has a measurable effect on people’s sense of wellbeing.  It even has its own word: ‘Biophillia’!
  • Research suggests that obesity is on the rise in this country because of decreasing rates of exercise, not because of diet: our calorie intake has not changed in the last 50 years.
    Walking for one mile burns exactly as many calories as jogging for one mile, it just takes longer.
  • Walking is as effective in helping those with mild depression as anti-depressant medication.
  • It costs £49 per month to treat one person for high blood pressure and cholesterol and therefore prevent a heart attack or stroke. It costs as little as £5 to support a person to walk regularly
