Intro

Most of us see walking simply as a means to an end, a way of getting from A-B. What most people don’t realise is that walking is also one of the most effective forms of all round exercises there is. It’s also suitable and safe for pretty much anybody – regardless of age, fitness level or ability. Getting involved in regular walking can dramatically improve your health and make you feel less stressed.

The government is increasingly recognising the importance of walking for the nation’s health, and health professionals now recommend that everyone aim to do 30 minutes of moderate exercise (such as walking) at least five times a week. Although health walking can benefit everyone, it is particularly beneficial to people who do little or no exercise.

Making small changes to your life can make all the difference - walking the kids to school, taking the stairs instead of the lift, walking to the shops - it all counts. Also, once you have warmed up, try walking at your own brisk pace for a few minutes. For example, aim to feel a bit warmer and feel your heart beat a little faster. You should still be able to talk comfortably though – so slow down if you feel yourself getting breathless. Make sure you return to a comfortable pace for the last few minutes of your walk. If you can, work towards walking 10,000 steps a day for optimum health. You can now get step-o-meters to help you keep a record of your steps from most good sports stores, and off the national Walking the Way to Health website on www.whi.org.uk

Did you know that walking can:

  • Halve your risk of a stroke or heart attack?
  • Burn the same calories as jogging?
  • Improve your blood pressure?
  • Lower your cholesterol?
  • Improve your confidence?
  • Help you feel less stressed?
  • Help you lose weight?
  • Reduce the risk of some cancers.
  • Help prevent Diabetes?

Healthwalks

Brighton & Hove Healthwalks are a great way to be more active, get out in the fresh air and make new friends. They are ideal for those who want to start exercising in a gentle and safe way, as well as those who want to walk regularly, but don't have the time to attend longer walks.

There are twelve regular walks across the city, and lengths range from under a mile (average walking time: 20-30 minutes) to three-four miles (average walking time one and a half to two hours walking time). Half the walks are suitable for wheelchair users and people with small children.

Walks are all free, led by trained Volunteer Walk Leaders and are also accessible by public transport. There’s no need to book – just turn up!

"It's been a great way to get fit and make friends. It's amazing how a regular walk increases fitness - what started off as a difficult climb has become so much easier - proving that it really does work!! It's also fun to explore places with like-minded people and to get out and feel a million dollars for it!"

Jenny, Whitehawk Healthwalker
